This is a great trail for an easy hike. The lookout offers a great view of the valley below and the lake gives the feeling of being on some remote mountain.
The trail is well marked and a very easy high hike, follow directions to get to Mono Cliffs Park, when you come to the turn at Mono Centre continue straight on 2nd Line until it comes to a dead end. Parking is free here but it is sometimes very busy and results in a longer walk to the Trailhead. Once on the trail continue to go straight, as you continue down the path you will come to a trail on the left, this will also take you to the lake but is a bit longer. Further down you will see the lookout over the park which is well worth stopping to checkout, shortly past that on the left is the trail to McCarston Lake. As a note; the stairs on the right take you down to some interesting rocks, it is a quick 5min trip down and back). Depending on the time of year you go, the trail up to the lake has a few muddy sections but people have built some wooden bridges to get past it. The trail curves to the left with a bit of a steep climb for the last couple of minutes, as you get up over the hill you will see the lake right in front of you. The trail on the right will take you around the lake and back to the main trail but it is a longer hike than just going back the way you came.
With two kids 6 and 8 it takes us about an hour to get to the lake and back. The longer Trail is approx 1.5 hours.
